with my family and my friends. thank you for the support. >> i'm looking forward to my brand new life. >> shepard: tonight, the ohio survivors talk about what's next. >> but first from fox this tuesday night, a defense expert is now backing up george zimmerman's claims about what happened when he shot trayvon martin. the witness is a forensic pathologist. and he says he can tell a lot just by looking at the teenager's chest wound and the gunpowder residue. >> the wound itself, by the gap, by the powder tattooing, in the face of the contact of the clothing indicates that this is consistent with mr. zimmerman's account that he -- that mr. martin was over him, leaning forward at the time he was shot. >> shepard: a long day of testimony for that witness.

he was clear cut. the defense team argues that george zimmerman shot trayvon martin in self-defense. prosecutors, of course, call it murder. and they point out that expert can't actually determine who started the fight. >> you can't testify as to who threw the first punch. >> that's correct, sir. >> in fact, you can't really testify whether there was a first punch thrown. >> that's correct, sir. >> shepard: by the way that doctor has 40 years of experience and says he charges about 400 bucks an hour for his testimony. he has also testified for defense at other big murder trials, including drew peterson and phil specter. juries convicted both of those men. we have team fox coverage tonight. trace gallagher on the issue of race in this trial. first, let's get to phil keating who is outside the courthouse in seminole county, florida. phil, today the defense addressed george zimmerman's claim that -violently attackedent that

him. >> first the assertion that trayvon martin smashed his head we peteedly into the sidewalk something not independently supported by appear aeyewitness. head photos taken in the house after he shot martin. he testified that they're consistent with zimmerman's claims that he was pummeled and nose broken. but on cross-examination he said he fully expects such a beating to leave blood on the fists of martin and that was when this jury was, again, reminded there was no george zimmerman blood or d.n.a. on trayvon martin's hands. >> shepard: phil, after the jury left today, the attorneys continued to argue over what amounts to. >> anna: immigration a hollywood style animation. >> yeah. in fact two hours after these jurors went off to secret hotel for the tonight. the jurors are still upstairs behind me arguing over am immigration. the animation was used by the defense just like was used to make the film

"avatar" with actors wearing body suits. the expert here that created this says it shows martin punching zimmerman first and the fatal shot all behind the town houses in zimmerman's neighborhood. the maker says his actors depict martin and zimmerman while wearing body suits. their movements were all based on police reports and witness accounts. the state objects to this entirely saying these are partial eyewitness accounts trying to match up with a 911 call screams in the background nothing can be timed perfectly. the judge has yet to rule on this in the morning. mark o'mara zimmerman's attorney will call a few more witnesses and some time tomorrow, shep, rest their case. >> shepard: phil keating in central florida. the issue of race in this case has played a significant part in the trial. explicitly as undercurrent that slips into the state's narrative. prosecutors have said george zimmerman profiled trayvon martin as a criminal. and they have played previous phone call zimmerman made to police to support suspicious

characters. each who, with, was black. but prosecutors are not the only ones who can use race to try to prove a point. today the defense insinuated that race may have played a part in the initial charges of george zimmerman. team fox coverage continues. trace gallagher live for us. the defense here, trace, was trying to show that there was tension between city leaders. >> yeah. in fact, former sanford police shep bill lee, shep, has testified that city manager a man named martin bonapard. lee said he recommended the 911 calls where screams can be heard in the background trayvon martin. they should hear them individually instead of as a group to avoid influencing each other's decision. the city manager did exactly the opposite. listen. >> was it your decision? was it the mayor's decision as to how that would occur? >> the decision was made

just to allow them to hear them. >> was there any consideration given to the idea of playing to those individuals separately one separate from the other so as to not affect their view or what they heard whether a they heard one to the other: >> there was not. >> he also said that he asked to be in the room at the time those tapes were played but he was not allowed nor were any of his police officers and as we know the city manager ended up firing chief lee, shep, before or just after those tapes were played. >> shepard: trace, explain how the prosecution countered that. >> they were simply saying that the city manager and the mayor were trying to be courteous to the family of trayvon martin. the city manager says at the time those tapes were about to be released to the entire public. so their thought was to make sure before the public could hear them that the martin family should hear them first. listen. >> the bottom line was that

it was the decent thing to do to play it for the family before it was release to the public. >> that was intent. >> that's why it occurred the way it did; is that correct? >> that is correct. >> he also said the reason the family didn't d. not want the police in the room at the time because they wanted privacy. he did not address the firing of chief lee at all today. shep? >> shepard: trace, emotions are running high over this case. in fact, the developer of a mobile video game called angry trayvon reports it's pulled the app. from online stores after outrage from critics and change.org. it featured a gun toting vigilante who wore a hooded sweatshirt. federal investigators have finally questioned all four pilots involved in saturday's deadly plane crash in san francisco which killed two teenage girls and injured more than 18 others. the head of the national transportation safety board reports that the commanding

pilot who sat next to the leading pilot was on his very first trip as a flight instructor. meanwhile, one of the flight attendants is now being called a hero. she was the very last person off the plane and today she described her experience and how she led passengers to safety. >> my brain was very clear and i planned what i had to do immediately. actually, i was not thinking but acting. as soon as i heard emergency escape, i conducted the evacuation. when there was a fire, i was just thinking to extinguish it not thinking it was too dangerous or what am i going to do? >> shepard: the main pilot had very little experience flying the aircraft boeing 777. it was also his first flight into san francisco international airport. claudia cowan live in the news in san francisco tonight. claudia? >> >> shepard, federal investigators spent several days interviewing the flight crew. there were actually three pilots in the cockpit at the time of the landing. and the lead pilot was serving as a flight

instructor for the first time while he was overseaing the pilot who was flying the boeing 777. this was their first flight tow together. none of them realized there was a problem with the airspeed until it was too late. meantime ntsb investigators also describe the debris field. >> when you get down to the sea wall, can you identify where the first strike took place. first landing gear impacted the sea wall and then the tail. >> and the head ofation anna airlines arrived in san francisco just a few hours ago and was mobbed by reporters as he was ushered out a back door. he didn't have anything to say today but yesterday described as quote intolerable. media reports that pilot inexperience may have been to blame for this fatal crash. he and other south korean officials will be working with the ntsb as this investigation continues to unfold. shep? >> shepard: claudia, a

county coroner says we won't know for two or three weeks the autopsy results of one of the teenage victims. he said those results should show whether an emergency vehicle did in fact strike and kill her after she got off the plane. well, just in tonight, brand new, the new england patriots tight end aaron hernandez reportedly admitted, admitted that he fired the shots that killed his friend. that's just some of what we're learning from just released court documents in the murder investigation. now, the patriot's owner has made his first public comments about the case and we'll have all coming up. plus, the emergency alert system. it is vital for officials to inform us about public safety threats on tv and radio. but there is a new report out that shows hackers could hijack those warnings. and think of the possibilities. it's all ahead from the journalists of fox news on this tuesday fox report. mother. mother!

learned from these just-released documents. >> 156 pages released in all, shep. and as well as the details of all the evidence of the cops apparently seized during their severance. they also lay out in these documents clearly regard as key. when cops first went to aaron hernandez house before the arrest you see are being made here. they started talking to him and he apparently said what's with all the questions? and then walked back into his house divide being told cops were investigating somebody's death. according to the warrant, quote. mr. hernandez slammed the door and relocked it behind him. mr. hernandez did not ask officers whose death was being investigated. mr. hernandez' demeanor did not indicate any concern for the death of any person. one other interesting fact, shep, from these. during those police searches, they went to his hometown of bristol

connecticut. apparently there they found a vehicle wanted nection in july of 2012 double homicide. these documents say that that vehicle was rented in hernandez name. that is all new from these documents tonight, shep. >> shepard: the investigation explodes. what is the pats boss saying. >> robert cross speaking out for the first time about. this he apparently summoned several boston reporters to his office he believed he was a good kid. the patriots organization hadn't had any problems with him. he went on to say, quote: if this stuff is true. then i have been duped and a whole organization has been duped. he spoke to me about wanting to be a role model in the hispanic community. i believed him. he knew how to push my buttons. robert kraft, the owner of the patriots as shocked it seems as everyone else

states are putting a lot of money behind that coup. saudi arabia today pledged to give egypt's new interim government read the military $5 million in grants and loans a short time after the united arab emirates promised to give $3 billion. the white house has said so far there are no plans to cut off the more than a billion dollars in military aid that we give egypt each year. it's also important to note here president obama has not called that country's military takeover a coup. though it is. and our laws prevent us from sending non-humanitarian aid to governments that result from military coups. some american lawmakers on both sides of the aisle have recently called for the suspension of u.s. aid to egypt so it's a big mess. and greg palkot is on it live for us tonight. greg, egypt's interim government also made some big political moves today. >> yeah, shep. it was some big political news delivered quicker than expected, we are told, maybe to calm down some

nervous people here. the interim president here mansoor naming new prime minister, an economist, a former finance minister, a good credential for a country in bad economic shape. he also named former u.n. nuclear watchdog interim vice president and claimed islamists would be included in the cabinet as well. this as the man really in charge of things here, the head of the military, general abdel -- went on tv to tell the egyptians the steps to transition are clear. he was referring to the now handover of power to a democratically elected civilian rule that can -- that include elections by early next year. he also told fox to stop maneuvering. the hitch is not everyone is buying it the muslim brotherhood members were busy on tuesday burying those skills. it clashes with the military. they are demanding that reinstatement of the post egyptian president mohammed morsi and flatly reject the

timetable calling surrender. other factions here are not happy here as well. it is early wednesday morning now and cairo got through at least one day without major violence or clashes. one wild card though, the muslim holy month of ramadan which has just now started and is an intense religious period and as we have seen in other muslim countries it can lead to some intense and violent activity. shep? >> shepard: greg palkot with some satellite breakup. nevertheless, that new acting prime minister in egypt earned his ph.d. in economics from the university of paris. he also was a prominent critic of the former egyptian president hosni mubarak accusing him of failing to open free markets and serve the poor. remember, egypt's military overthrew mubarak back in 2011 during the arab spring protests. president obama is reportedly thinking about speeding up the withdrawal from afghanistan because talks with the afghan president harmid karzai are falling apart. image that sources tell fox

news a recent video conference call between the two leaders was, quote: an unmitigated disaster. and the "new york times" newspaper reports president obama is now looking for closely at the so-called zero option. in other words, get every single troop out of there after next year. jennifer griffin is at the pentagon tonight. what's the thinking about whether this is a bluff or some sort of trial balloon or what? >> well, shepard, congressman buck mckean who heads the house services committee issued a statement tonight saying that administration officials assured him no zero option is on the table. what is clear is that the talks about u.s. troops staying after 2014 are stalemated. >> i'm not aware that this was a trial balloon. i can't say that for sure. >> i think it's important to note that we stated here, i think it was here but it was certainly publicly and in january that zero was an option. >> 61,000 u.s. troops will go down to 34,000 in february.

ahead of afghanistan's presidential elections. slated for april 5th after which president karzai will be out of a job, shep. >> shepard: and, jennifer, we're learning more about when things apparently went sour if they didn't go sour from day one with that man. >> well, it seems that it really came to head during a june 27th video teleconference call. that's according to bob scales, the fox military contributor. >> i was told that that video teleconference was an unmitigated disaster. both the president -- both presidents went after each other with karzai threatening on the one hand to cut off relations with the united states because we're talking to the taliban and with the president trying to get his agenda through to karzai and karzai not listening. >> meanwhile, the taliban officials in can you tar have all been closed their offices there. they are angry that officials there took down their flag and their sign

after president karzai balked that the taliban were setting up a government in exile, shep. >> jennifer griffin at the pentagon. more than a dozen women and children died today when a roadside bombs hit the wrong target. local militants were trying to kill government troops. but the blast hit a cartful of villagers instead. officials said an afghan soldier opened fire on nato forces at a base in kandahar killing one slovakian soldier and wounding six others. jury selection started today in the case of the u.s. army psychiatrist who says he gunned down american soldiers to defend the taliban. major nidal hasan is charged with killing 13 people, wounding dozens more of fort hood in texas back in november of 2009. it it was the worse mass shooting at the u.s. military facility ever. he is acting as his own lawyer, which means he can question survivors of the massacre. they have waited almost four years to testify, and they say they are fed up with the delays. one set back when hasan

grew a beard which against military rules and then refused to shave it. now he is asking the judge to let him tell potential jurors that the army is forcing him to wear his uniform in court. he claims the uniform represents an enemy of islam. casey stegall is in fort hood tonight. casey? >> shepard, hasan sat in the courtroom today looking haggard. remember, is he in a wheelchair paralyzed from the waist down due to injuries he sustained on that day from those who took him out. he is now 42 years old. the potential 20 jury members or panel members as they are called in a military court martial were peppered with dozens of questions this afternoon by the judge and the prosecution. but when hasan himself had his turn to ask the questions, he had none. there is a pool of about 150 commissioned military officers to choose from for this panel from all over the united states. six of the 20 were already

dismissed after today. this whole process we are told should last about a month. because everyone has to it agree on at least 13 panel members the trial itself is tentatively on the calendar for august 6th. shepard? >> shepard: casey, some survivors and victim's families say they are suing the feds demanding that clarify the massacre as an act of terror. right now the pentagon calls it officially work place violence. that means military victims are not eligible for the purple heart or extra government benefits. the feds say the purple heart is only for service members injured or killed by enemy combatants. the victim's lawyers claim hasan qualifies since he admitted that he killed his fellow soldiers to defend the taliban. three women, who had spent a decade as hostage in the home of a mad man in cleveland are speaking out and saying thank you. tonight, you will actually hear from them. plus, police say a woman was laughing and joking as she talked about hiring a hit man to kill her own
